Massive bronze medal--89.5mm and weighing approximately 13.5 ounces--circa 1959, commemorating Ferrara, the city and commune in Northern Italy which used to be part of the Papal States from 1598 to 1859. Obverse depicts the coat of arms of the Comune di Ferrara. On the reverse, at center, is the statue of Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto at Piazza Ariostea; around are the Castle Estense and the Cathedral of Saint George.
